Stratus clouds are low-level clouds that cover the sky in a blanket and make the weather appear gloomy. They are usually located anywhere from 0-1,200 feet in the air. If they are low enough to the ground they become fog. If the layer is thick enough, they can produce a light drizzle of rain, but usually they do not precipitate.
